About this course

Learn to use a phone or tablet camera, organise your images and create an eight-image portfolio. A free, self-paced beginner course with practical tasks and self-checks.

What you will learn

  • Handle a phone or tablet camera and compare framing, light and composition.
  • Plan respectful photography, including permission and thoughtful sharing.
  • Organise photographs with useful titles, captions and keywords.
  • Select and order images to tell a coherent story.

What you will make

An eight-image photography portfolio, with captions, reasons for your choices and a short reflection on your progress.

Unit 1: Camera basics and safe photography

Use a phone or tablet camera, compare your photographs and plan a safe, respectful shoot.

Unit 2: Organise and share photographs thoughtfully

Build an easy-to-find album with useful captions and make a deliberate sharing choice.

Unit 3: Create an eight-image portfolio

Research a theme, select eight photographs that work together and explain your decisions.

How you will learn

  1. Learn: read the short lessons and try the worked examples.
  2. Practise and save: save your notes or files in each unit. Return to improve them whenever you need.
  3. Check and revise: compare your answers with the guidance, revise your work and mark the self-check done.

Learn at your own pace, with no deadlines or trainer approval gates. Your saved practice is visible to you and authorised course staff; public sharing is not required.

The core teaching is available in the online lessons. PDFs and interactive exercises are optional. Keep your own copies of useful work.

Before you start

For beginners who want to tell stories about everyday life and their community. No previous photography experience is needed.

  • A phone or tablet with a camera.
  • A place to save photographs and a notebook or simple document for notes.
  • Internet access to read lessons and save your practice in Moodle.

Use what you already have. Paid software and a public photo-sharing account are not required.
